This May, GWCA Partner Christine Nestor will be taking on one of the most extraordinary endurance challenges on the planet, the Tenzing-Hillary 2026 Everest Marathon, the highest marathon in the world.
More accustomed to climbing in the Himalayas, Christine will be swapping her crampons for running shoes as she prepares to race at extreme altitude. Joined by her nephew, Mason, the challenge begins long before race day. Together, they will spend 10 days trekking through the Himalayas to reach the start line at an astonishing 5,446 metres above sea level.
The marathon itself is a formidable 26.2-mile (42K) route, descending from Everest Base Camp to the Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar. Held annually, the race commemorates the historic first ascent of the world’s highest peak by the late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, a fitting tribute to resilience, courage, and human determination.
Christine will be running in memory of our late Partner, Tony Lewis, while raising vital funds for GWCA’s nominated charity, The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides care and support for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
We are incredibly proud of Christine’s achievement and dedication.
